music & lyrics

I rented this from Netflix to watch after a hard day's work at the wastewater lab. I have the 3 movies at a time plan. This movie was delicious. The opening scene is an 80's music video by Hugh Grant's character's band called Pop. It's the most hilarious thing I've seen in a while, and the tune is pretty catchy, you'll find yourself singing its cheesy lyrics while doing dishes. Drew Barrymore plays Sophie, a neurotic ex-writer (a role better fit for a Debra Messing type IMO) whose talents are discovered by Grant's Alex, an 80's pop has-been who lives off of singing at class reunions and state fairs, when he is tapped to write a song for current pop singing sensation Cora (played by newcomer Hailey Bennett). The story revolves around Alex & Sophie collaborating on a hit song for Cora, meanwhile falling in love. OK here's the thing, I could see why Sophie fell for Alex, but I have no clue why Alex fell for Sophie. Alex is funny, witty, and kind of vulnerable at times. Sophie is intrusive, annoying, and overly sensitive. So anyway, the song they come up with is beautiful but then they watch it get mutilated when it is remixed by Cora and co. And that was comedy gold, the contrast of old and new has never been so damn funny. Anyway, this movie was hilarious, even though Sophie was not. The End.

I saw this movie at a drive-thru movie theater with my ex-boyfriend/roomate on a sleepy Saturday night. I was a little disappointed that the sole comedic premise of the movie was based on how Steve Carell's character's appearance changes as he becomes a modern day Noah. Sure the jokes were funny, but they were all about his new appearance, so they get stale fairly quickly. The Arc itself was indeed very impressive as were the myriad of exotic animals and the CG generated flood. Had the movie just been about the Arc with the animals and the flood, without any dialogue, it would've still managed to captivate the audience's attention. All actors did a great job, I just wish Lauren Graham had been given more lines because I think she is superb on Gilmore Girls, and it was kind of a shocker to see John Goodman play a villain. Overall I would say this movie was cute, but it wasn't the laugh out loud comedic romp the media hyped it out to be. Or maybe it was just 'cause I watched it with my ex, hmmmmm...... ^-^ the end.
